The beginner’s guide to roleplaying
Introduction (not a must read)
I have been roleplaying on RP/RPPVP realms since Argent Dawn and Earthen Ring were the only realms which had the RP policy. I am not quite sure of when it was, but it was many months ago. I started out on Earthen Ring with the dwarf paladin Ryog. At the time my roleplaying was casual and never really thought through. I was quite new to the game and not a power leveler, which made me get tired of that paladin quickly. I realized that two new realms had opened, Defias Brotherhood and the Venture Co. and I decided to roll a undead warrior, called Arachnia on the Venture Co. She was the first character with which I experienced – what I would call – true roleplaying (with background story, with World-RP, with a guild created entirely based on her background story etc). I created my first guild, The Rotten Crusade, which never gotten that many members as I didn’t actually know much about guild management. – We had a guild bank though.
I later deleted that character and moved over to Defias Brotherhood where I created Rhagnar clan Bharaz the Bearhunter, a dwarf hunter who loved ale, fishing and bearhunting. I joined a guild called Holy Lightbringers and got promoted to Councilor within two weeks as I had many thoughts and ideas about guild bank system, roleplaying missions, events, contests etc. I was active with my ideas and we begun to have weekly meetings and events. That guild is my absolut best experience with roleplaying guilds so far. They found it sad when I left for Scarshield Legion, but I´m sure they understood. – They are still on Defias Brotherhood, by the way, growing rapidly. Give them a whisper if you are interested.
The reason I moved over to Scarshield Legion was because I wanted to be in a realm from the very beginning, experiencing the very first outdoor raids and perhaps in the future make a name that someone would notice. I created the human paladin Manovan from day one, but got tired of him within two weeks (when he was level 25). He had a 2,5 pages background story and I would like to think of myself roleplaying after it. I joined the Theramore Lancers (who were active in the starting of this realm) and I tried to more or less bring with them what I had learned from my first created guild and the Holy Lightbringers. I later got promoted to Captain in that guild, but left it when they had trouble with the leadership. It didn’t take long before Manovan was removed.
I had learned much by making only these characters (plus a couple of alts I never actually played much) when I started the night elf druid Lorendel – which was created merely to create a strict roleplaying guild for druids only, who would later struggle for full-druid instance raids. I created Circle of the Moon and had weekly meetings and events, and summarized everything we did and put it in our guild forums. It was the result of all good sides of the previous guilds I´ve been in and I hope to think that my members often got satisfied. But by IRL reasons I had to buy a second account.
On my second account I created the warlock Manovan, based on the background story of the paladin Manovan. I wrote more on his background story which turned out to be four pages with size 10 times new roman in Microsoft Word. Now I was happy with a character to roleplay – and this is where I am today.
This guide
This guide is merely my tips on how to improve your roleplaying and enhance your experience with roleplaying. It is not a fact that this will work out for you if you’re a casual/newbie roleplayer and wants to learn more. This guide is absolutely not my way to aggressively tell you what to do. It’s more of my way to help people that actually ”is interested” in learning more.
I have not much experience of other ”real life” roleplaying games, other than some paper and pencil ones from when I was a kid. I have fully learned through World of Warcraft alone, and through playing on many different of the RP realms. This guide should therefore not make you into a professional roleplayer, but into a good follower of the RP policies.
If you like what’s written in this guide, you are free to quote it if you put my name with the quote.
Also remember to read the RP policies before you start playing on a RP realm. You can find the policies here: www.blizzard.com/support/wowgm/?id=agm01725p
Part I: Character creation
You don’t need to have a book-sized background story before you make your character. Instead take your time deciding what character you want to roll. What class, race and faction do you want to play? – That’s always the first choice. After you have decided for class, race, gender, faction, appearance and you’re going to type in a name, this is where you will have to think.
First of all, Blizzard has a naming policy which you can read by clicking this link here: www.blizzard.com/support/wowgm/?id=agm01722p
After you’ve read the policies you will know that you can not create a RP character with the name Gangraper, Hitler!&$%er or Terminator%@$%. Well, it’s true that you may have a nickname, but the most popular in RP realms is a first name that could work as a real name for that race and gender you have chosen. The FlagRSP addon is good to have if you want to have a nickname also.
Instead look up somewhere what would work as a night elf name, orc name, tauren name, human name or whatever. When you later start playing you will be happy that you chose this instead of MrYodaLazerMan (which in some way is a cute name also, but not fitting).
You now have your character ready, with a good name that works with roleplaying without pissing someone off. Now many people tend to do their best to create a story for the background of their character and about how the character is as a person. I believe that you don’t need to rush things in documenting everything about your character, as things can develop while you play. For example, my night elf druid Lorendel had a goal in life, and that goal was to rally all druids in the world and together help to cure Azeroth to maintain the balance and harmony which the forest spirits and the demigod Cenarius is crying for. That was everything about Lorendel, and it wasn’t even written down. He had no background story other than that he had been in the Emerald Dream for a couple of thousand years. He merely had a goal and I was roleplaying by that goal.
You don’t need to have a background story or a goal to be a good roleplayer!
But if you wants to create your character to the best and most well-thought roleplayed character there is, the next part will help you with the story creation.
Part II: Story creation
The best thing you can do if you want to create a story about your character is to know some of the lore around Warcraft. The lore on the community website is incredibly long and you don’t have to read it all. I haven’t read it all. I have read the parts concerning my race and faction, so I know at least some about that.
You can find the lore by clicking here: www.worldofwarcraft.com/info/story/
If you want to create a dwarf and make a story around the dwarves’ lore, then read about the Titans and the war between the clans, and that’s it. You now know what you need to know about dwarves. Before I created my druid only guild, I read all the story about the night elves and the druids, and that took a long time. When I created Manovan, I read all story about Lordaeron and the Scourge. That was also long. But you don’t have to read it, and if you decide to – you don’t have to read it in a day.
After you are satisfied with your story, you will know exactly what is your character’s goals and how he will act. Will he be a good guy or a bad guy? Or something in between. Then you can move on to the next part.
Part III: World-RP
World-RP is almost like World-PVP; you RP in the world of Azeroth, and not in special guild events or roleplaying events. This is the best way for a newbie to learn how to roleplay. You will learn that some people doesn’t have the slightest clue about roleplaying and is in fact not interested in it. Then you will recognize them and know that you don’t have to waste your time trying to roleplay with them.
If you don’t know how to start an IC (in character) conversation, or is a little unfocused or unsure of yourself. Then you must think to yourself. Why would my character want to talk with that person? Is it for guidance? If it is for guidance, ask something you need help with. There are millions of ways to start an IC conversation with a stranger, and later on you will also know which one would only be a waste of time trying to roleplay with and which ones are the true and fulltime roleplayers.
When shouldn’t I be roleplaying? That is a good question. In a RP realm you can roleplay whenever you want, and there are no specific reason not to. But you can think of yourself when you are running Deadmines for the 10th time. Should I roleplay and say that I´ve been here nine times before or should I be quiet about that and just run the instance? Actually it might be good for you to sometimes take breaks from the roleplaying and just grind a little like any other World of Warcraft-geek.
Part IV: IC/OOC and chats
There are actually only two chats in which people are enforcing IC roleplaying. That is the /say and /yell chats – since that is what you’re character is actually saying and those around him can understand and listen to. The general chat, the guild chat etc is not your character interacting with others, but you (the player) doing it. But as a roleplayer you should be very strict with the IC in /say and /yell rule, since many people will get irritated of the slightest OOC (out of character) statement in those chats.
There is something important about leet speak and abbreviations. If you speak like this when you speak in character: ”u r high lvl” or ”can i have 20s plx”. Then you should think to yourself what the hell your character is saying. When you speak you will most likely say the full words, and therefore you should try to write the full words in /say and /yell. What you do in other chat channel are none of my or other roleplayer’s business. Also the thing about level is not very liked by roleplayers. Since this is a game and ”levels” are part of games, a roleplayer acts out as the level thing doesn’t exist and thinks of everything as ”amount of strength/knowledge/experience” instead. So instead of writing ”u r high lvl”, you can write ”you are strong” and still meen the same thing but be in character. Instead of writing ”can i have 20s plx” you just write ”could I have 20 silver please?”
Fake roleplaying and in character guild chat; many guilds have IC guild chat where people (even though their characters don’t interact with each other) are talking completely in character. Guilds like SI:XXV has solved this with some engineering skills and a hearthstone, but this could also be called fake roleplaying (something I made up myself). With fake roleplaying I meen that you use fake in character conversations to enchance the chatting or the experience of chatting, and to learn about your guild friends’ roleplaying and characters even though you haven’t met them in the game. So fake roleplaying in guild chats could be to simply teach you (the player) about the characters, and not to teach your own character about it. This is free for speculation.
Part V: Emoting and god emoting
World of Warcraft has a huge amount of emotes which you can use when you roleplay. Emotes are not a chat, it’s a way for your character to do some kind of action. Some of them are /thank, /cheer and /dance. If you want your character to smile, you can type /smile instead of writing *smiles* in /say or /yell.
It’s important that you can see the difference of emoting and god emoting, since god emoting is often used by new roleplayers or those who just ”pretends” to roleplay (believe me, there are many of them out there). God emoting is to in emotes do some action that would litterary affect everything. For example: ”Manovan picks up a rock and throws it in the face of Varimathras so he dies.” First of all, as a Forsaken I would get killed if I would throw a rock at Varimathras. Second of all, I can’t kill him with emotes. Third of all, see first of all and second of all.
Part VI: Guilds
As World-RP sometimes can be really difficult to find and to make it good, many are seeking RP guilds that hosts various roleplaying events where the character can attend and have a good time in character. Many roleplayers joins those guilds just to roleplay, while other casual roleplayers join guilds that are more OOC because they prefer the grinding part of the game. People are different, but the absolut best way to experience roleplaying in World of Warcraft is with a good guild.
Part VII: Addons
Not everyone are using addons so this part is not helping everyone, but some people are and might be interested in a list with good addons for roleplaying. Myself I only use FlagRSP but there are many others. Here is a quote from the Roleplaying forums where Deodoran of the Argent Dawn realm has listed many addons.
Part VIII: Your way from 1-60
Remember to roleplay with them roleplaying with you and to act your character all the way from level 1 to 60. But the world is big and that means changes. Your character might change during the way and become a completely different person. Character development is just a sign of very good roleplaying. Also read much of the quests you recieve as the world is full of lore, and the story behind Warcraft is a great story.
Now you are ready to face of your foes in Azeroth as a fulltime roleplayer.
Thanks to
My mother, myself, World of Warcraft, the guy who came up with RP realms, my computer, coffee and blue jeans.
Remember that World of Warcraft is so much more than just grinding.
